More abandoned homes set on fire in Mid-Michigan

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Nancy King recalls her first thoughts when she saw smoke and flames billowing from the house next door.

"I was worried because the flames, at first it started in the front but then the flames in the back just went ballistic," King said.

Luckily the fire was contained and didn't spread to her home.  No one was hurt nor was anyone inside because the home is abandoned. It was considered uninhabitable.

But there was activity in the house.

"The door of the house was left open so there was always people just running in and out of the house," King said.

But Nancy isn't the only person in Saginaw to see her neighbors home ablaze on Monday. It has happened not once or twice, but four different homes were set on fire just hours and blocks apart.

"When I woke up this morning the house was on fire," said Mariano Rosa, a neighbor.

Rosa said he got a smoke-filled wake-up call from across the street as another abandoned home caught fire.

"I didn't know it was gonna happen in my neighborhood," Rosa said.

Saginaw Fire Battalion Chief Steve Filary said these fires are no coincidence.

"They're all vacant houses and all appear to be intentionally set," Filary said.

He says these fires could be linked to at least three others set within the last two weeks. While police still search for clues, neighbors like King worry there could be others.

"I just wish that they would just stop before somebody really gets hurt," King said.
