GRATIOT COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A train and truck collided, which crushed the vehicle and sent a 21-year-old man to the hospital.

It happened Tuesday morning on Pierce Road in Gratiot County.

Witnesses told the Gratiot County Sheriff’s Department the man failed to stop at the railroad crossing, and was hit by the passing train.

They said they heard the train blow its whistle three or four times before the collision.

Gratiot County Sheriff Doug Wright said the impact pushed the vehicle hundreds of feet down the track before the train was finally able to come to a stop.

Police identified the driver as Zachary Powell, 21, of Ithaca. He was seriously hurt and airlifted to St. Mary’s of Michigan hospital in Saginaw. The driver is listed in very serious condition.

Investigators said they believe he was either distracted or not paying attention. The driver was wearing a seat belt.
