SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The sounds of sirens, the sight of children getting in and out of police cars, and teenagers conducting field sobriety tests.

Those aren’t usually the indicators of a good time.

"Oh, they love it," said Kari Hecht.

On Tuesday it was all fun and games. The National Night Out in Saginaw brought the locals and law enforcement together.

"The helicopters, police cars and fire trucks... Shows them that they're not scary," Hecht said.

Parents like Hecht said these types of events help humanize police officers, creating a better bond with the communities they serve to protect.

"I mean, I want this guy to learn that if you're ever in need go to a police officer or fire fighter or paramedic and they're going to take care of you," Dave Derocher said.

It’s not just police, fire and paramedics were also there to show and tell. There were even scuba divers in a water tank showing what it’s like for dive teams that do rescue missions.

Saginaw police said it’s all part of an effort to build trust with the locals.
