Local government works with teens to volunteer in community

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Hundreds of teens are getting their hands dirty painting, raking and picking up trash all over their community.

Damontai Richard is part of the group that helped clean-up on Wednesday in Flint.

“Help the community out so it can look nice,” Richard said.

It's all part of the Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce Teen Quest Summer Youth Initiative Volunteer Service Day.

“It feels awesome because I love giving back,” Richard said.

The program helps teens find jobs in the community, but leaders, like Rhetta Hunyady, said they also want to emphasize volunteerism.

“When you see young people really enjoying what they're doing and providing a service, that tells you you're on the right track and that young people really want to do good things. We just have to create those opportunities for them,” Hunyady said.

Many of the teens said their hard work is well worth it, because helping out their community just feels good.
