FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Hoping to inspire youth, a Mid-Michigan boxing champion's documentary hits the big screen.

Claressa Shields is a 2012 Olympic Boxing Gold Medalist and Flint native.

"This film, it's just gonna show that hardships may come, but God keeps on blessing you," Shields said.

Shields stars in a documentary entitled “T-Rex,” which follows her journey from Flint to China and the 2012 London Games alongside her one-time trainer, Jason Crutchfield.

"Me and my coach, we was very close it was almost like father-daughter relationship,” Shields said. “In the film it shows that, as I grew up, how me and him, we separated. It definitely shows that young kids need a mentor and they need somebody like that in their life."

The film made its local premiere on Wednesday morning at the Flint Institute of Arts.

Shields is an ambassador with Up2Us Sports.
