Steel drum concert honors father, bandmate

CLIO, MI (WNEM) -

Andy Lloyd had a big night ahead of him on Wednesday. He performed on stage with his dad's former band mates, known as the Ten Fifty-Three All-Stars.

“I’m really excited,” Andy Lloyd said.

However, Wednesday’s performance was bittersweet. The band is reunited without Andy Lloyd’s father, Andrew Lloyd. He passed away from a heart condition in May.

"This is something he would have done for any one of us, so we had to put something big on," Erica Givens-Palmer said.

Givens-Palmer was one Andrew Lloyd’s former band mates. She said they performed together all over the world after meeting as students at Mott Middle College.

"He'd be playing as hard as he could on that steel drum right now if he was here with us," Givens-Palmer said.

She said the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint performs every year. The band wanted to use this year's event as a reason to get back together and to remember the man they said brightened every performance with his smile.

"We said we were gonna be extra vibrant with a lot of energy and life, because that's what he was, full of life all the time," Givens-Palmer said.

James Coviak from Boys and Girls Club helped make it all happen.

“It makes me feel really good inside, it’s been an amazing experience,” Coviak said.

It’s a memorable evening, especially for Andy Lloyd.

“He would be proud,” Andy Lloyd said.
