LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A 78-year-old woman died in a multi-vehicle traffic crash over the weekend.

The accident happened on Van Dyke, south of Deanville Road in Brown City about 2 p.m. on Saturday. That’s in Lapeer County’s Burnside Township.

Kyle Atkins, 27, of Burton, was traveling on Van Dyke with his mother Lisa Atkins, 55, and grandmother Corrine Miller, 78. Lisa Atkins was sitting in the front and Miller was in the back seat, police said.

They are both from Burton.

Kyle Atkins came to a stop behind a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Peter Manimanis, 18, of Brown City.

Manimanis was stopped on the roadway yielding to northbound traffic before making a left turn on a private drive, police said.

A Dodge 3500 series truck driven by Nicholas Percy, 43, of Spring Lake, was traveling southbound when it approached the two vehicles.

Percy struck the back of Kyle Atkins'’s vehicle, which subsequently struck the back of Manimanis’ vehicle, police said.

Miller had to be extricated from the vehicle and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kyle Atkins and Lisa Atkins were transported to McLaren-Lapeer for non-life threatening injuries.

Manimanis and Percy were not injured in the accident, police said.

Percy’s girlfriend, Kelly Campbell, 44, of Kentwood, was a passenger in Percy’s vehicle during the accident. She was transported to McLaren-Lapeer for non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of the accident, Van Dyke was closed for about three and a half hours for investigative purposes, police said.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information is requested to call Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at 810-245-1381.
