Change in the winds causes controlled burn to be canceled

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A prescribed burn has been canceled after a change in the winds.

The Department of Natural Resources set fires at Nayanquing Point in Bay County on Wednesday in an effort to burn off phragmites.

Phragmites are a large perennial grass that choke off cattails and limit access to the water.

The burn caused heavy smoke and large flames in the area, but crews had to stop their work after winds changed from the West to the East. In an effort to keep smoke from moving into residential areas, the burn was canceled about halfway through and will be finished later.

Officials said they were able to treat about 75 of the 150 acres scheduled to be burned.
