GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Saginaw Valley State University student and football player died after he was involved in a car accident.

Eric Wynns died in a car accident on I-75 in Genesee County’s Mundy Township on Aug. 10.

He was a junior wide receiver majoring in social work, the university said.

Wynns enrolled at SVSU in 2013 and joined the football team in 2015.

"Any time you lose a member of your family it is extremely difficult, and this will be hard on our Cardinal football family," said SVSU head football coach Jim Collins. "We at SVSU embrace a family culture that is felt throughout our program and the entire athletic department. Eric was a fine young man and a great teammate. He will be sorely missed."

The university is offering grief counseling to members of the campus community, the school said.
