Students, educators praising all year school

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Even students are praising the benefits of year-long school or a balanced schedule.

“The knowledge we gained its still fresh in our minds,” said Kalan Thomas.

Thomas is a student at Beecher high school. Classes are already in session for the school year because they're on a balanced calendar school year.

“A lot of my friends from different schools they try to fight me say, ‘Oh you go back to school early’ but when they're getting up early every day in the middle of October we have two weeks off,” Thomas said.

Sure, the students get a shorter summer break, but they also get more shorter breaks throughout the year.

“The main thing I like about those breaks is it’s around when school gets kind of heavy. So it’s easy to relax for those two weeks,” Thomas said.

Principal Diana Castle said the balanced school year works well for the students by keeping them focused all year long.

“We've been on the balanced calendar for a while, the students have gotten used to it. We would worry that we would have more students show up after Labor Day when the traditional schools start but we don't have that,” Castle said.

Those short breaks throughout the year are not only a great break for the students but also the teachers

“The job is strenuous. Our students are worth it and we push them every day and want to make sure they grow. It takes a lot out of you,” Castle said.

At Beecher, even when school is on a break, there are still programs the students can take during that time.

Students said they don't mind having a shorter summer.
