LAPEER COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A 78-year-old Dryden man died Thursday afternoon after he was involved in a multi-vehicle crash.

The accident happened at the intersections of Lake George and Newark Road in Lapeer County’s Attica Township.

Elmer Lumsden, 78, of Dryden, was traveling northbound on Lake George Road in a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu when he failed to stop at the stop sign at Newark Road, the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office said.

Lumsden entered the intersection and emerged in the path of a 2000 Jeep Cherokee traveling westbound on Newark Road. The Cherokee was driven by Jacob Mueller, 21, of Metamora.

The collision was broadside and caused the vehicles to travel northwest, striking a motorcycle, police said.

Guy Palmer, 60, of Metamora, was on a 2004 Harley Davidson at the stop sign in the northwest quadrant of the intersection. He traveled southbound on Lake George Road to the stop sign at Newark Road.

Lumsden’s vehicle struck Palmer when it went off the roadway. Palmer was ejected from his motorcycle.

The Malibu and the Cherokee overturned before they came to a rest, police said.

Lumsden was pronounced dead at the scene. He had to be extricated from his vehicle, police said.

Mueller and Palmer were transported to McLaren-Lapeer Region for non-life threatening injuries.

Police do not believe excessive speeds or alcohol is a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is requested to contact Deputy Nick Vandenberg at 810-245-2449 or Detective Sgt. Jason Parks at 810-245-1381.
