Saginaw to install security cameras in Old Town district

Posted: Updated:

It's said that big brother is always watching.

"We want everyone to know the cameras are there so they know they can feel safe" said Saginaw Police Chief Robert Ruth.

As security becomes more high-tech, that statement becomes all the more true. The Saginaw Police Department said it's adding security cameras in Saginaw's Old Town district.

"We're gonna start putting some of these cameras into those locations so that citizens can feel safer in these locations to come shop and visit businesses" Ruth said.

The cameras come from neighborhoods where buildings have since been torn down.

An increase of safety on Hamilton Street isn't the only effect cameras will have, Ruth said knowing that police are watching could prevent crimes from being committed.

"When the cameras were installed in neighborhoods, they definitely helped reduce crime in years past" Ruth said.

On Hamilton Street in downtown Saginaw, many business owners and residents said they are excited to see the city keeping an extra eye on downtown.

"I think its a great idea" said Louise Hamilton, owner of 400 Court Street Studio Antiques and Interiors for over 12 years, "I do welcome any assistance that we get down here that would help the police to be able to monitor things that go on."

Shoppers in Saginaw's Old Town feel much the same way.

"If the cameras make people feel safer and welcome to come down here, then that's good thing" said shopper Keenan Rodammer.
