LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency has released its ranking of veteran-friendly schools in Michigan.

The schools are ranked based on their on-campus, veteran-centered services to support both academic and transitional needs of veterans.

MVAA Director Jeff Barnes said nearly half of the schools ranked received a gold-level designations.

"Whether the schools offer an active student veterans club, on-campus support staff, accelerated learning programs for military experience or all of the above and more, veterans attending these institutions have a variety of services and resources available to them as they begin the next chapter of their lives," Barnes said.

The rankings were determined by seven characteristics:

  • On-campus veteran's coordinator and/or staffed veterans center
  • Active student-operated veteran club/association
  • Established process for the identification of current student veterans
  • Evaluation and awarding of credit for military training and experience
  • Veteran-specific website/portal
  • Monitoring and evaluation of student veteran academic retention, completion and graduation rates
  • Monitoring and evaluation of student veteran job placement rates

Among the gold-level designations were: Delta College, Central Michigan University, Mott Community College and Saginaw Valley State University.
