Crim Festival of Races kicks off on Friday

Posted: Updated:

There's plenty of athletic ability in Flint this weekend.

The HealthPlus Crim Festival of Races is officially a go after kicking off with races on Friday.

The Lois Craig Invitational kicked things off and Special Olympics racers were the first to race down the bricks.

"They work hard at it. Some of the kids who do this race, they practice all year round," said John Myers.

Back from the Special Olympics World Games, John Myers was supporting his friends, and cheering them on.

Leeann Phillips, a race participant, said it's that passion and teamwork that bring on tears of joy, and make this event all the more special.

"This is the best, this is a great night in the city," Phillips said.

Just down the street, some very good runners competed in a mile race.

The Michigan Mile is a display of some elite athletes, including Heather Kampf, the winner of the professional women's race.

She said this weekend is great for a city she's come to love.

"A lot of people sort of have a negative connotation for the city of Flint, and this is a weekend where the city really comes alive with running and it's just like any other great running community in the country, so it's a fun time to come and celebrate people being healthy and active and enjoying the sport," Kampf said.

Saturday’s festivities start bright and early at 7:30 a.m.
