SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The past few days have been a bit tumultuous for people with money in the stock market.

But a local financial adviser said if investors stay calm, they’ll likely come out ahead.

The phones here at Arner Investment Management in Saginaw are pretty quiet. That's because Todd Arner has already advised his clients what to do when something like this happens with the market.

“They know that the market goes up, and the market goes down. They understand that this is part of the game,” Arner said.

Arner has seen this sort of thing happen before.

In fact, he says these types of 10 percent pull-backs have happened 30 or more times. And on average, Arner said it takes the market about 10 months to bounce back.

“That's why we don't panic and sell when the market's down,” Arner said.

So, what is to be blame for this recent nose dive in the market?

A few big worries have the markets shaking including oil prices and the state of China’s economy.

“You couple that with that built up angst – people have been calling for and waiting for this pullback,” Arner said.

Arner said investors just need to hang in there and not make any decision based on emotion. He also said young people need to start investing in the economy by throwing their money in the market.

“You just have to understand that these ups and downs are all part of the game, and when they happen, don't move on emotion, let us help you take that out of the picture,” Arner said.
