Police investigation of Bedford football team reveals potential criminal conduct

BEDFORD TOWNSHIP, MI (Toledo News Now) -

The Michigan State Police Monroe Post Detective Bureau has finished their investigation into the Bedford High School football team.

The bureau was contacted on Aug. 20 over incidents of inappropriate behavior that occurred at the Sauk Valley Resort in Woodstock Township, Lenawee County.

The team was there for a football conditioning camp. The incidents reported occurred between Aug. 9 and Aug. 12.

The investigation, including interviews and information from the school district staff, revealed the inappropriate behavior included multiple acts of Aggravated Indecent Exposure and potential Criminal Sexual Conduct.

The bureau has submitted a report to the Lenawee County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Any criminal charges filed will be made by the office.

Monday, the head coach of the football team was suspended for one week, meaning he will not be there for the team's season opener this Friday night. But there is a key point that the superintendent wants everyone to know.

"The coaches were not involved in that piece of it... totally separate. It was, just the structure I think could have been tweaked a little bit, to do things a little bit differently," said Kleinhans.

School administration has been working with MSP and conducting their own investigation, to make sure they're handling it professionally.

"Our legal team was here, step by step, going through everything that we need to do to make sure that we're handling this correctly," said Kleinhans.

He says the students who violated the handbook have also been dealt with.

Friday's football game against Saint Francis is still scheduled to go on as planned.
