Two months later, tornado recovery continues

Posted: Updated:

"Life hasn't been good..." said Raymond Care, as he became emotional. "Geeze I can't do this."

Normally strong and stoic, Care fought back tears as he recalled the physical and emotional toll left from the tornado that ripped through the property he worked his entire life to build.

Care said he had to take his wife to a nursing home because of the stress from the devastation left behind.

Adding insult to injury, it has been nearly two months since the storm and Care is still waiting on First Merit Insurance to finish paying out his claims.

"That's what you get for paying your insurance," Care said.

Care is now living in a trailer because the insurance company refuses to pay the damages to his home.

TV5 is asking the tough questions to find out why the insurance company is dragging its feet.

"From my perspective insurance companies do not want to do the right thing," said Gary Lappin.

Care hired consultant Lappin with Allied and Associates to help with his insurance claims.

Lappin said Care did receive some money from his insurance company, but is still waiting on the money he's owed for his home claim and farm equipment.

Lappin said he's been working with First Merit and is confident he'll get Care they money he's owed to rebuild his home.

First Merit did not return calls to TV5 for comment.

"With any luck by the end of next week he should have another check," Lappin said.

But Care isn't relying on luck. He said he wouldn’t want anyone to go through what he's dealing with and cautions others to make sure their insurance policies are air tight

"Take your policy before you sign on the dotted line take it to a lawyer and have it refined," Care said.
