Bus 'rodeo' part of national safety initiative

Calvin Bolson is one of many bus drivers out on the roads, responsible for getting people to and from their destinations.

"It's really important that we know what we're doing on the road," Bolson said.

Today, the Odawa Casino bus driver gets to test his skills.

"It’s a great training exercise for us."

It’s the 40th Annual Michigan Small Bus Rodeo at the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth. Drivers from across the state are tested on how well they do their jobs

"I've learned so much coming down here for this – this is my second year," Bolson said.

This event is part of a national bus safety effort and highlights the need to keep bus drivers safe on the road.

"Safety is always our top priority for transit," said Jill Drury.

Drury helps coordinate the bus rodeo and also manages a transit company in northern Michigan.  She said this event helps other drivers learn best practices from each other.

"The bus rodeo just gives our drivers an opportunity to work on their skill sets," Drury said.

The winners from today will go on to compete in the national competition next spring. Drivers like Bolson said it’s an invaluable experience for them and the passengers they serve.

"The driving course, it teaches you. This is what you’ve got to look for on a daily basis out there on the roads. Safety is the number one matter," Bolson said.
