Deadly accident involving state trooper highlights need for highway safety

Posted: Updated:

Today's road accident involving a state trooper has rattled many drivers.

"I just slow down pretty slow and keep my eyes peeled for anyone out on the road," said driver Michelle Shaltry.

It’s a cautionary tale for anyone working out on the road.

"Slow down and be aware of us out there working and stay off your cell phone," said Mike Bruns, a construction worker.

Bruns said he's had close calls and it’s usually caused by distracted drivers

Road safety is one of the biggest safety concerns for law enforcement.  But there are ways that you can help keep our officers safe, according to Saginaw County Sheriff William Federspiel.

"One of the toughest parts of our jobs is being out on the highways, being out on the roads," Federspiel said.

Federspiel said drivers might be surprised to learn the most dangerous part of being in law enforcement

"A lot of people think wow the most dangerous part of your job is being in a shoot-out. Actually, no. It's being out in traffic," Federspiel said.

He has solid advice for drivers who encounter police vehicles on the roads, to help avoid accidents like the one today that left a state trooper clinging to his life

"Slow down and move over and don't look at what we're doing, keep your eye on the road," Federspiel said.

It’s good guidance to help keep everyone safe out on the roads.

"You're out there trying to work and then you have that distraction, so you know it's hard to do your job," Bruns said.
