SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Just in time for your kids to head back to class, drug resistant lice has been found in Michigan.

According to the American Chemical Society, lice resistant to over-the-counter insecticides are now present in at least 25 states, including Michigan.

Lice has developed genetic mutations that fend off the active ingredients in many over-the-counter shampoos and rinses.

Prescription treatments are available from your doctor. But experts say whatever treatment you use it is important to repeat the treatment several times to make sure you’re killing the adult lice and eggs.

The CDC estimates that nationwide, there are as many as 12 million lice infestations per year in kids ages 3 to 11.
