State police complete testing on 10,000 Detroit rape kits

LANSING, MI (AP) -

Testing has been completed by the Michigan State Police on more than 10,000 sexual assault kits found in a Detroit police property storage facility.

Gov. Rick Snyder and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy say the next phase of the process is investigating and prosecuting rape cases associated with the kits.

The announcement was made Wednesday at a news conference in Lansing.

Worthy says her office currently is looking at 106 cases for prosecution and estimates it will take 3 to 5 years to investigate and prosecute cases from the rest of the tested rape kits.

More than 11,300 kits were discovered in 2009 and turned over to the state police for testing. Worthy says some kits still need testing. Some date back to 1984.
