Small business development encouraging growth in Genesee County

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Ginny and Matt Sherrow opened Fenton Winery and Brewery in 2007, a time when the recession was staring them right in the face.

“It's been – it’s been a wild ride,” Matt Sherrow said.

Starting a small business isn't easy, but the two overcame obstacles and now business is booming.

But before the business reached the point it is at now, the couple needed some help along the way.

That's where the Small Business Development Center, or SBDC, came into play.

“They answered and helped us and provide resources to any problem we had. It's great to have an organization to lean on,” Ginny Sherrow said.

The SBDC said they hope other businesses would use their services. Because the more businesses that do well, the better it is for the entire area.

“Small business really, as they say, is engine that drives our economy. And the more small businesses we start, the more potential there is for job growth and economic resurgence in a community,” said Marsha Lyttle, SBDC regional director.

And County Clerk John Gleason said this is something he's seeing right here in Genesee County.

“People should be optimistic that Genesee County is stabilizing and moving forward,” Gleason said.

Gleason said Fenton Winery and Brewery is proof of the SBDC's impact on the area.

“It shows what's available for any of us, if we have the drive and initiative to make the investment, both financially and individually, you can succeed,” Gleason said.

That success is shared among the small businesses in Genesee County.

“It's good to see everybody's kind of getting back on their feet and each business helps each other grow,” Matt Sherrow said.
