SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A Saginaw Township police officer was struck by a vehicle on Wednesday night.

Officer Matthew Eckerman, a 17-year veteran of the Saginaw Township Police Department, was directing traffic at Maple Woods Drive West and McCarty Road after a fire started at McCarty Wine and Cheese just down the road.

He was struck by the vehicle and rolled over the top of the car.

Eckerman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He is in pain, but is doing well and expected to make a full recovery, according to Saginaw Township Police Chief Donald Pussehl.

At last check the officer was still hospitalized.

Officer Michele Fleming spoke to Eckerman, who recounted the details of the accident Wednesday night.

"He had said that he was attempting to get someone to turn and he saw the car. It happened just that fast. He said he didn't have time to react," Fleming said.

Pussehl said he is breathing a sigh of relief.

"We're very fortunate that the officer was not seriously injured last night after being struck by the car. I met with him at the hospital, very thankful, no serious injuries," Pussehl said.

Michigan State Police are investigating the incident.

Fleming hasn't been hit by a car, but she's had a few close calls.

"It's probably one of the most terrifying things you can imagine at that point and time," Fleming said. "Your heart starts to race and you don't know what's going to happen. You just hope and pray that they stop in time or you get out of the way in time."

Fleming uses a reflective vest, along with her patrol cones and flares to moderate traffic.

Now, she's asking motorists to be patient.

"We want to get the road open and traffic flowing normally just as much as the drivers do," Fleming said. "But we also want to do it safely not only for us but for the drivers as well."
