Labor Day weekend huge for Mid-Michigan businesses

For Debra Andrews and her family, Frankenmuth is somewhat of a yearly tradition.

“Everything always runs smooth in Frankenmuth,” Andrews said.

Labor Day weekend may be known as the un-official end to summer, but their family still has quite a few bases to cover before this weekend is over.

“We always hit the Cheese Haus!” Andrews said. “We like the Bavarian Inn and we like Zehnders, and we always go to the country store for the candy.”

And according to manager Jerry Matthews, this family isn't the only family they'll see come through these doors this busy holiday weekend.

“Because we're the Frankenmuth Cheese Haus, the cheese goes over pretty good,” Matthews said.

The Cheese Haus is getting ready to celebrate 50 years of business.

“Mostly it's going to be tourists that come in, try to get their last minute things in, and then stop down at Bronner's and get their Christmas stuff,” Matthews said.

Just across the street at the Frankenmuth Fudge Kitchen, they're in the business of satisfying your sweet tooth and what's inside these cases won't go un-noticed this weekend, either, according to Vice President Zak McClellan.

“It's a good little last breath of life into the summer.  This is kind of when I think the weather's perfect, too in Michigan,” McClellan said.

It's not typically by accident that you stumble into a store filled with chocolate.  In fact, there's a method to their madness at the Fudge Kitchen.

“We try to hook 'em in with blowing the scent out on the street, and we kind of put them into some chocolate wonder. Then they come in, we give them a sample of whatever they want to try on the table,” McClellan said.

Whether you're a local or a visitor, there's no such thing as a bad boost for these businesses.

And Labor Day weekend certainly won't disappoint.

“It always feels a bit better when you have people that are packing the streets, it gives life to all the employees and the business and the bottom line too,” McClellan said.
