AT&T partners with schools to donate backpacks

Essentials for back to school: notebooks, crayons and backpacks.

But not every kid has these things to bring on the first day.

“We hear all the time about the need for essentials kids need in class and to help them learn,” said Gavin Goutz, AT&T Michigan’s executive director of external affairs.

That's why AT&T has teamed up with Bay County Area Schools to bring more than 300 backpacks stuffed with school supplies to students who need them.

“They say thank you so much, for the learning the students needed and for the help that it provided for the districts,” Goutz said.

We caught up with one volunteer, helping her mother collect and sort backpacks.

“I'm glad to volunteer. It's so much and when I grow up I just want to be my mom,” said Shania Noel.

Each school district selects the students who they know are in need of the essentials.

“Bay city, Saginaw, and other schools that are near that,” Noel said. “They're shipped to the kids that can't afford any backpacks and I’m so excited for those kids to get their backpacks bright and early before school starts.”

This year the schools will also get a box of two EpiPens. That's a big help, because one of these would cost them about $500.

The backpack distribution started 15 years ago in Bay County, now, over 2,000 students will receive backpacks across Michigan.

“It makes me think about that all the kids that can't afford it, they need to get one because school starting and every single kid should have a backpack when they start school,” Noel said.
