Drainage back-up causing flooding

Posted: Updated:
FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

It's the muddy and clogged remains of yesterday's flash flooding in Flint, has taken over the street in front Mike Stewart’s home.

"They don't unclog the drains ain't no way for it to go down the sewers," Stewart said.

It was frustrating for many drivers to maneuver through this section of Thayer and Glenwood Streets near by the "old Chevy in the hole."

After the rain, intersection in Flint looked more like a site for water rafting.

"Every time it rains like that ...that what it is," Stewart said.

After the water subsided, the cluttered drainage appears to be the culprit.

TV5 met with Flint’s Department of Public Works Director Howard Croft, and asked the tough questions.

"We rely on the residents to call our service center (810) 766-7202, to make us aware there is a concern," Croft said. "You see water rising generally we can immediately send a sewer crew out they will unclog it. That will clear up any issues that occur."

Croft said the flooding near Stewart’s house could be caused by a number of problems.

"It's more of a low lying area, so generally water is going to accumulate in your lower lying areas," Croft said. "There is a lot of construction going on there. I didn't make it down to that site, I didn't see the specific incident. But certainly, there are a number of factors that could cause the back up."

Croft said this is not a matter of neglect or denial, the city just needs to know where to respond. Something its residents can help out with.

"We have employee on staff 24 hours a day to deal with thing like that," Croft said. "Safety is always the first issue, that’s why that number is available 24 hours a day and is monitored and checked 24 hours a day."
