Dismal weather doesn't lead to significant camping cancellations

BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A last hoorah before the end of summer usually means busy campgrounds with lots of activities.

But with this rainy weekend, a lot of campers are staying inside their trailers

“The weather has been horrible,” said camper Lee Miller.

At Bay City State Park, the rain has forced some campers to adjust their plans.

“Well, we planned to cook over the fire which clearly you can't do in the rain,” said camper, Lisa Walters.

The park has a tendency to flood because of its location. And with more rain in the forecast, it could cause some campers to pack up and head home.

“We do get a lot of rain, we do a lot of monitoring and checking, we have no flooding just some mud today,” said Park Ranger Brian Dunn.

But if the park does experience a lot of flooding, they will notify the people who made reservations at those specific sites.

“To be able to call them so they can make the decision if they still want to come in or not,” Dunn said.

But Dunn said so far, no cancellations.

It seems most are still eager for a great weekend.

“It's a little bit of a downer, we're still hoping that Saturday and Sunday will be better but there’s still some rain in the forecast,” said camper Lee Miller.

Even though certain activities are out of the question, thanks to the weather, there are some things the weather can't take away.

“And just sit here and hang out with friends and family,” Miller said.
