Residents celebrate Labor Day with bridge walk

FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

It’s Labor Day and that means we’re honoring the achievements of America’s hard working men and women.

In Frankenmuth people celebrated with the annual walk over a very special bridge.

“I love whatever I’m doing here and to see all my friends cross this bridge, it’s exciting,” Dorothy Zehnder said.

For the 29th year in a row, Zehnder led about 100 of her friends across a symbol of Frankenmuth. It was the annual Holz Brucke Bridge Walk. It’s held every Labor Day since 1986 to celebrate all the hard work it took to build the bridge in the late 70s.

“They did a good job because the bridge has held up for so many years and it’s really in good shape,” Zehnder said.

The event also had a little international flavor.

“It’s really cool. I love these German traditions here. It’s like a little bit of home,” Elena Beil said.

Beil is from Munich, Germany. She’s wrapping up her internship in Frankenmuth and was thrilled to take part in the walk.

She will be heading home soon, but said she will miss the people of Frankenmuth very much.

“They just have a very big heart and the neighborhood here is so welcoming and open,” Beil said.

Many consider the walk the unofficial end of summer for the Great Lakes Bay Region, but Zehnder scoffs at that notion. She believes there is plenty of warm weather left.

“We’ll have some more nice days come October, September yet. We’ll have some nice days,” Zehnder said.
