Restaurant shows first responders appreciation on Labor Day

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

First responders across the area showed up for work on Labor Day just like they would any other day.

One Mid-Michigan restaurant made being away from family on the holiday a little easier to bear.

Olive Garden in Saginaw went around to a number of area police and fire departments to deliver free meals to those who protect and serve.

“It feels great to me. For someone to recognize what you do, not only as a firefighter, but just as a citizen here and give you a nice meal for the day,” said Chedrick Greene, Saginaw County firefighter.

Greene is like any firefighter. He knows there is no such thing as a holiday in his line of work.

But thanks to Olive Garden, first responders throughout Saginaw County received freshly prepared pasta, salad and bread sticks on Labor Day.

“This is one of the first years of many that I actually get to enjoy and partake in an actual warm meal,” Greene said.

In all, about 140 meals were served.

Officials with the restaurant said Labor Day is one of their favorite times of the year.

“We like to be engrossed in the community and the things that happen. This is a great way for us to really reach out and show our appreciation for those that go to work for us every single day,” said Brock Domerese, general manager at Olive Garden.

She said Monday’s initiative was part of a nationwide campaign. It’s the company’s way of saying thank you to those who protect and serve.

“They know to count on us now and that we’re going to show up year after year. So we just try to do just a little bit more every year and make it a memorable experience for them so they always have a good time,” Domerese said.

As for Greene, he said he loves being a firefighter. Especially when people in the community show their appreciation.

“Anytime that the citizens tell us thank you, that’s the greatest feeling in doing our jobs,” Greene said.
