Mother: School denies enrollment for one kid, accepts the other

REESE, MI (WNEM) -

A local mother demanded answered after she said a school refused to let her son enroll, even though they lived in the district.

“It’s been hard because I don’t know what to do because he’s been in that school his entire life,” said Danielle Forbes, mother.

Forbes is at a loss. She said she can’t figure out why her son Travis isn’t being allowed to attend Reese schools.

She said her son was rejected for school of choice, but at the time she lived in Carrollton.

She moved to her mother’s home, which is in the Reese school district.

Forbes fourth grade daughter was allowed to attend Reese schools. So Forbes wants to know why her son was denied.

“I want him to have a quality education. That’s why I called [TV5] so that we can get him back into the quality education that he was getting out there,” Forbes said.

Travis said he’s eager to get back to class.

“Just kind of sad I guess. I don’t get to see my friends on the first day, don’t get to meet my new teachers. None of that,” Travis said.

After TV5 spokes to Travis and his mom, Reese schools appeared to change their stance.

Superintendent Keith Wetters said Forbes needs to give the district an addendum to her lease with Sept. 8’s date. That, along with another proof of residence, like a bill, coupled with her driver’s license, will pave the way for Travis to join his friends.

“I hope that he gets enrolled and starts school as soon as possible,” Forbes said.
