'Save Brian's House' makes plea for help after unexpected renovation costs

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

"We need to get this done," Save Brian's House Community Group President Jackie DeLorge said.

It's a plea for help from a group trying to help others in their final days. A plea to help transform a church into a house, Brian's House.

The hospice facility plans to plant new roots here, but the unexpected cost of renovations could halt that dream.

"We anticipated between three and $400,000, that estimate is now up to $600,000," DeLorge said.

It's not just money, DeLorge said the Hampton Township church needs new furnaces, air conditioning units and lights just to name a few, "Just think of your own home and think of all the things that you have to run that home, that's what we're going to be needing."

And they need them soon. DeLorge said without the community's help, there's no life-line for some needing end-of-life care, "I'm getting phone calls from the community requesting rooms for Brian's House and I have to turn them away."

Until this church is a home, the group vows to keep its voice heard.

"We've gotta get this done and we will," DeLorge said.

The group is hosting several fundraisers.

The first is September 20 from 2 to 5 p.m. aboard the Princess Wenonah. You can purchase a $25 ticket for an afternoon of dinner and music before you board at 1201 Evergreen Drive, the Bay City Middle Grounds.

Then, on October 11 the Essexville Knights of Columbus is hosting a breakfast.

Finally, on October 23, there will be a gospel concert at the State Theatre of Bay City. It starts at 7 and is free, but donations are appreciated.

If you cannot make it to a fundraiser, but would still like to donate, you can do so on the group's GoFundMe page.
