Consumers Energy says it plans to purchase power from a new 100-megawatt wind farm planned for Michigan's Thumb region.
The unit of Jackson-based CMS Energy Corp. announced Wednesday that it has entered into a long-term agreement with Geronimo Energy to buy electricity from the Apple Blossom Wind Farm in Huron County, which plans to start construction next year.
As part of the agreement, Consumers will have a future option to purchase the wind farm.
When the project goes online, Consumers says it will exceed Michigan's renewable energy portfolio mandate for utilities. Consumers currently purchases power from seven Michigan wind farms. It owns and operates two wind farms and is working on solar power projects.
