FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Mid-Michigan basketball legend, Roy Marble died Sept. 11 after a long battle with cancer.

On Thursday, his community is remembering him.

"Well it's unfortunate that happened. But he meant a lot to this community," said Terry Thames.

Thames cuts no corners when he speaks of the passing of Roy Marble.

"The legend basketball from Beecher," Thames said. "I went to school with his brother Jeron, Jeron Marble. We best friends, he meant a lot to this community."

The former Beecher basketball star went on to play for the University of Iowa and then to the NBA.

But his legacy reaches far beyond the basketball court. Generations of Beecher fans that never saw him play, know about his Buccaneer pride.

A funeral service for Marble will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church in Flint.
