FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

For 25 years, the Michigan Harvest Gathering has raised food and donations to feed those in need in Michigan.

Attorney General Bill Schuette said the efforts of the drive have provided 54 million meals for citizens across Michigan.

"25 years ago my wife Cynthia had this gem of an idea, lets raise money and food for food banks across the state of Michigan," Schuette said.

And that program continues at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan in Flint. Schuette was the director of the State Department of Agriculture when he launched the Michigan Harvest Gathering.

While he's proud of the program, he says the need to feed the less fortunate here is as strong as ever.

"When you give, and I hope everybody does, when you give to the Michigan Harvest Gathering, it's a great investment because it's low overhead, high return and you help people who need a hand," Schuette said.

Phillip Knight, the executive director of the food bank council of Michigan, couldn't agree more.

"We find that at least 16 percent of our population are facing what we call food insecurity and they don't know if they're going to have enough food for today," Knight said.
