Police search for suspect in Thursday night's deadly hit-and-run

Michelle Kowalczyk heard a loud noise outside her Bay County home Thursday night, and stepped outside to see 58-year-old Calvin LaForest laying in the middle of the street.

"I told him help was on the way, help on the way," Kowalczyk said.

The Bay City resident had been riding his motorcycle when he was struck by a pick-up truck.

Kowalczyk, a nurse, ran to his side to help. But there wasn't anything she could do.

"I checked for a pulse, and little by little, he left us," Kowalczyk said.

LaForest was dead before first responders could arrive.

The truck driver was no where to be found.

Witnesses said the driver ran off, leaving the truck behind. After an investigation, police discovered the truck was stolen.

A neighbor said her fiancé actually talked with the driver before he took off. Although, he didn't know who it was at that time.

"He had walked up to him and asked him for the cigarette," Kowalczyk said. "He didn't know at that time he was the driver. And he thought he was a bystander. And he took off."

Kowalczyk's fiance did get a good look at the driver.

The witness described the suspect as a man in his mid-20s, about 5' 7", thin, and wearing a lime green shirt and khaki shorts.

"He said the gentlemen was not speaking clearly, he was slurring his words. Not sure if he was in shock, had been hurt, or if he were drinking," Kowalczyk said.

Police are still searching for the man. Kowalczyk hopes he eventually does the right thing.

"I just think he needs to turn himself in. He did himself more injustice by taking off," Kowalczyk said.

LaForest's funeral is Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. at the Gephart Funeral Home in Bay City.
