Todd Courser has announced he will be running for his former position in the State House of Representatives.

He said the way legislation forced the resignation was wrong and voters deserve a voice in the matter. He also said his wife approved his decision to run.

Courser said he is confident he can win his seat back.

"I think the constituents have an opportunity to weigh in on it," Courser said. "I think that's what's going to happen."

A Lapeer City Commissioner also announced she’s running for Courser’s former job as state representative for the 82nd district.

“It’s time for a woman’s voice in Lansing to represent the 82nd District for Lapeer County,” Elaine Gates said. “Integrity is coming back to town.”

Courser resigned from his position on Sept. 11. His resignation came after the House investigated Courser’s sex scandal with former House Rep. Cindy Gamrat.

Gamrat was expelled for her involvement in the affair and the smear campaign that followed.

Gamrat has announced she is running for re-election.

Gates said her top goals are eliminating the pension tax, bringing common sense back to politics, and writing laws that are understandable to residents.

She was elected to the Lapeer City Commission in 2014.

Margaret Guerrero DeLuca, who ran against Courser in 2014, also announced she will be running for the open position.

"I am disappointed and angered that virtually nothing has been accomplished in the last two years by the Republican-controlled government in Lansing. Important, urgent issues like fixing our roads have fallen by the way side," DeLuca said in a press release.

DeLuca said she will focus on repairing the roads, school funding, and supporting veterans and senior citizens.

She previously served as mayor of Imlay City.

The special election begins with a primary on Nov. 3.
