Man attacked by black bear in Michigan concerns local campers

BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Joe Schoren is surprised to hear a porcupine hunter was attacked by a black bear, even with his own experience.

"We had a bear encounter at night. It climbed up on our picnic table and under our awning," Schoren said.

The hunter, in a rural part of Clare County, stabbed the bear, scaring it off, but not before suffering minor injuries.

Schoren has a theory on why the creature may have been so aggressive.

"It could have been if it was a female bear, he may have startled her and her cubs if she had cubs nearby," Schoren said.

Reports of a black bear attack have left some outdoors enthusiasts across the state on edge.

But for Robert Taylor, he actually used to go after the bears himself, and said he’s never had any issues.

"I've hunted them. I've never had any problems with them chasing me. They leave me alone," Taylor said.

The bear, likely injured, is still on the loose.

Michigan Department of Natural Resource officials have been placing traps in an attempt to capture it.

Until that happens, Schoren has some advice for those venturing out into the woods.

"Don't be by yourself. Make sure you have a companion with you, at least close by. I think the noise factor would keep bears away," Schoren said.
