Son seeks answers in mother's murder

A son is seeking answers for his mother’s murder.

Kenyatta Payne tries to find a way to describe losing his mother.

"It's like a horror show," Payne said.

She died near the intersection of Barks and Lapeer Road in Flint. The home where Eloise Payne was stabbed to death is gone only a vacant lot remains. But the pain of that day 24 years ago is still present.

"Not a day goes by. You're always thinking what could've happened? What could you have done to prevent it? You know it's just a lot for a person to take in," Payne said.

Police said they found Eloise Payne dead on the kitchen floor with multiple stab wounds. She was killed on Nov. 29, 1991. She was only 39 years old.

Payne said his mother was active in church and the community. But she always made time for her children.

"Her laugh, her smile, she always played with us when we were kids you know and she was always there," Payne said.

Officials with Crime Stoppers said this case means a little more to them because this family has been without answers for so long.

"It's just not fair when they have to live all these holidays and birthdays every day without his mom," said Julie Lopez, Crime Stoppers Genesee County director.

Investigators believe the killer was someone she knew and said there were no signs of forced entry at the home.

Lopez is hopeful the $2,500 reward will lead to justice for this family.

Payne said he's hoping an arrest and conviction come soon. He knows it won't bring his mother back. But at the very least, someone will be held accountable for her death.

"I don't think you'll ever have closure. But it will just be relief that that person will be going to jail," Payne said.
