Double Up Food Bucks program encourages SNAP recipients to buy fresh produce

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Double up on healthy foods!

That's what Congressman Dan Kildee wants Flint residents to do and shop at the Landmark Food Center.

"The whole goal is to make sure people have healthy choices and to incentivize people who are SNAP recipients to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers," Kildee said.

When using your BRIDGE card at Landmark Food Center, your green will go twice as far.

The Double Up Food Bucks program will match your purchase of locally grown fruits and veggies, up to $20 per day.

So far, Landmark is the only store in the Flint-area participating.

The match is funded by legislation originally introduced by Kildee.

"It was included in the farm bill. My legislation included an extra $50 million across the country for communities that want to embrace this program so the money comes from the federal government," Kildee said.

The program is also expected to pump millions of dollars into the local economy.

Landmark is expected to serve as a model for other stores in our area to expand the program.
