BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A squad of about 20 volunteers had one mission: scrape off gang graffiti and give a garage a fresh coat of paint.

The Bay City Neighborhood Alliance started working on the garage on the east side of Bay City at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

"And we had local businesses donate paint, donate food, donate stuff to drink, and these people are donating their time this morning they're going to come over, we're going to paint her garage up, beautify our neighborhood and bring bay city back one house at a time," said volunteer Joshua Biggs.

Younger and older volunteers picked up scrapers and prepared this structure for paint.

"I love it, I love to help people, that's what I do best, is to help others," said volunteer Sheila Alexander.

Gang activity is a unexpected in Bay City, but some of the volunteers said it really is a situation that needs to be addressed.

"You wouldn't think so, but as you ride around on our rail trail and you look at different houses and different buildings there's a lot of gang tagging that's been going on in different spots as well as kids just going out and doing graffiti," Biggs said.

The homeowner said she appreciates the volunteers work, waving to them from her back door.
