GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A third student has been diagnosed with meningitis from a Mid-Michigan school.

Swartz Creek Community Schools alerted parents on Tuesday they were working with the Genesee County Health Department.

In a letter to parents, the principal at the high school said the school is being cleaned to help prevent the spread of the disease. One of the students had been diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Another case of meningitis was recently confirmed at the middle school.

There are two types, bacterial and viral. Bacterial is much more serious, and could potentially be life-threatening.

The third case is at Jessie Rouse Elementary School in Saginaw. The principal sent a letter home on Sept. 18 alerting parents a student had been diagnosed with viral meningitis.

In the letter, the principal said the school is taking steps to ensure the school is properly sanitized.
