STANDISH, MI (WNEM) -

Two suspects were arrested after police discovered a meth lab in their home.

Police responded to the home, on the 200 block of N. Main Street  in Standish, shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday for a well-being check on a child at that address.

Trish Roth has been serving customers for two decades at North Forest Cafe.

"I'm glad it's done," said Trish Roth.

That restaurant is located next door to the suspected meth lab. Police put up a sign on the home, urging people to stay away from the property.

"I didn't know it was next door. I found out that they closed the restaurant at 6 o'clock due to the lab being next door," Roth said.

The Arenac County Sheriff's Office said Robert Toner was taken into custody from his home and Jaclyn Smith arrested in Standish due to the discovery.

But that's not the only shock they got when they entered the home.

Police discovered a 16-month-old child was living and sleeping just feet from the lab.

"The child was taken to St. Mary's Hospital by MMR for decontamination," said Arenac County Sheriff Jim Mosciski.

Mosciski said the lab is the first of its kind they've had in years.

He said the practice is illegal, dangerous and needs to be stopped.

"How dumb can you be to cook meth in a house with children around? It's wrong. 100 percent wrong," Mosciski said.

Roth agrees.

She's glad the restaurant was able to re-open today and have life in the small city of Standish return to normal.

"That's really sad that nothing was done sooner with this. It's probably taken too long but I'm glad it's done," Roth said.

Smith and Toner were both arrested and are each facing a charge of maintaining a drug house, maintaining a meth lab and child neglect.
