Residents taking steps to protect against lead contamination

“Oh, this is my heart right here, this is my heart,” said Debra Carter.

Carter loves watching her granddaughter Kelis. It frightens her to think that the water coming out of her tap could hurt Kelis.

“It's a big concern because it can really harm her. With what they saying as high as the level of lead is,” Carter said.

On Friday, the city of Flint issued a lead advisory to its residents.

Some homes could have dangerous levels from old infrastructure leeching lead into the water

That's why Carter said she doesn't even use it to cook with.

“From what I'm hearing it's pretty bad. I haven't used it in quite a while. We always buy it. I'm not taking any chances,” Carter said.

Sure, the family uses water bottles at home, but it's hard to be certain what water Kelis gets at school or daycare is safe for her to use.

“Go to school, you know, I'm not they don't give bottle water out at schools,” Carter said.

Lead is harmful to children and elderly with lower immune systems. A big concern for parents of infants, who use water to mix with baby formula.

Flint Mayor Dayne Walling addressed the issue today, and said the city is working on ways to improve its water.

“Know that I'm extremely concerned with any risks of lead exposure and elevated lead in our community,” Walling said.

The city is advising all residents to have their water tested for lead. The health department is offering free testing.

But Carter said she's not going to bother testing her water. She's lost all hope Flint's water will ever be good enough to use.

“It's like, not too much is being done about it and it's getting worse,” Carter said.
