Police: Man murdered over unsettled debt

Posted: Updated:

Police have identified the victim of the Sept. 25 homicide in Saginaw.

Makiel Swift, 40, was shot near 7th and Cherry shortly after 11 a.m. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from a gunshot wound. It marked the city's seventh homicide of the year.

The 21-year-old suspect fled the scene on foot, but was apprehended by Saginaw police minutes later.

Tony Raheem Davis was arraigned on premeditated murder charges.

Davis told police he killed Swift because the victim owed him money, police said.

Another shooting happened on Sept. 26 that left one victim in critical condition.

Saginaw Police Detective Sgt. Reggie Williams said a man was found collapsed with several bullet wounds. Officers discovered the 24-year-old victim in critical condition on the 4100 block of Pemberton St.

Witnesses said a black Dodge Charger with a spoiler on the back was seen speeding away from the scene.

“Last year we seemed to do well throughout the year until we saw a spike in violent crime around September. We’re asking for the community to help us with any information they may have about these crimes,” Williams said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL.
