LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Michigan students will continue to get healthier school meal options.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded over $8 million in grants to help school nutrition professionals serve healthier meals for students.

The Michigan Department of Education received $496,000 in federal grants to help expand food service training programs and provide smarter lunchroom training within schools.

State Superintendent Brian Whiston applauded the efforts to secure the federal grants.

“It’s wonderful to see stakeholders leverage resources in order to improve the health and academic growth of students,” Whiston said. “The connection between good health and academic success is proven, and this work will continue to fuel the creation of healthier school environments across Michigan.”
