Local organizations host bottled water giveaways

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Wadell Fletcher is with the House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church.

"We're going to try and stand together and help somebody in need of a drink of water," Fletcher said.

The Flint organization will have its third bottled water giveaway on Wednesday, all in an effort to help low income families forced into buying bottled water.

That's because numerous studies said the tap water in Flint isn't safe for children to drink. Fletcher said he's glad to do his part to help out.

"We would just have them come around and when they would open the trunk they didn't even have to get out and they were so appreciative of it," Fletcher said.

Cars 108 is also getting in the act, working to create clean water Flint. Clay Church is spearheading the program.

"We working with sponsors right now to try and get as much clean water as possible," Church said. "The distribution, water filters that can help make pipes right now that aren't clean safe for people to drink and cook with."

Church said the station is in the process of putting together its own bottled water giveaway, trying to make sure everyone has safe water.

"It is crazy to think about one of the biggest cities in the state doesn't have safe drinking water," Church said. "And then when you think about what lead does when it gets into the system of a child or a pregnant woman or even an elderly person it's dangerous."

Fletcher is looking forward to seeing a lot of people at the Carpenter Road church on Wednesday. He said he loves to help people. But he admits he wants to see a day when bottled water giveaways aren't necessary.

"That's our hope. That the water will be safe. That this will be an issue behind us and we'll learn from it and where the problem is let’s nip it in the bud as soon as we can," Fletcher said.

The House of Prayer Missionary Baptist Church’s bottled water giveaway will be at 1851 W. Carpenter Road, from 4-6 p.m.
