Michigan Catholic Conference airs advertisement on traditional marriage

Posted: Updated:

A new advertisement is putting the idea of traditional marriage and family front and center. But is it controversial, or just a harmless expression of faith by the Michigan Catholic Conference?

"No religion can impose its values on an entire nation," said Joan Brausch.

Brausch is a local LGBTQ activist. She said she is also a woman of faith.

"I honor the tradition of everyone who believes strongly what they believe in. But we do have a separation of church and state in this country, and we need to abide by the law," Brausch said.

For their part, the Michigan Catholic Conference said this ad and another they're airing are not meant to be political statements.

Instead, they are were aired to coincide with the Pope's recent trip to the United States, where he spoke about the importance of family.

"The family should be a recurring theme. How essential the family has been to the building of this country," said Pope Francis.

Still, Brausch understands how some could feel slighted by this message.

"People who are in love with another have the right to get married. And that's what the law says. So they could certainly be offended by the fact this continues to be promoted," Brausch said.
