Bill nearing OK lets drivers show police insurance via phone

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -

Drivers pulled over by the police could show proof of auto insurance on their mobile device under legislation nearing final approval in Michigan.

The state Senate plans to vote on the bill Wednesday. It won approval in the House in March.

The legislation would clarify that motorists can demonstrate proof that their car is insured by showing a paper or electronic copy of their insurance certificate. It would prohibit police from viewing other information on a driver's smartphone.

The officer could require the driver to forward an electronic copy of the certificate so the officer could verify its authenticity in a safe setting.

Drivers who fail to produce evidence that their vehicle is insured are subject to a civil infraction, and judges can suspend their driver's license.
