Holiday staple receives a pre-holiday miracle

A holiday staple was at risk because of a lack of space.

Toys for Tots, the volunteer initiative that gathers up donated presents to give kids for the holidays, didn't have a space to house donations.

"I really hate to see this year's program not be here" said Robin Heise, Saginaw County’s chapter of Toys for Tots.

For the past 20 years, Toys for Tots has helped thousands of kids unwrap presents on Christmas.

"We get no building there's no Toys for Tots program in Saginaw County," Heise said.

But the charity that provides gifts to roughly 3,500 children in Saginaw County needs its own Christmas miracle.

"Usually by this time I have a building... but so far I have nothing," Heise said.

Heise said last year the charity used the gymnasium inside Houghton Elementary, but said that option hasn't been offered this year.

Heise said Toys for Tots desperately needs a location to collect and store donations – mainly toys – from now until Christmas. But with time running out, he said he's not giving up.

"It's kind of hard to think of any kid not getting a toy during Christmas... but I'm still out there looking," Heise said.

But, after airing this story on TV5 on Thursday, Heise no longer has to worry about that.

"Since the news broadcast, I've had a couple people call me and offered me buildings," Heise said.

Toys for Tots has a new problem: picking which building to use.

One of the people who answered the call was Pastor Rob Troutman from Reach Community Church.

"Who wouldn't sponsor Toys for Tots if you could?" Troutman said.

Troutman said his church opened up only two weeks ago, at the site of the old Furbringer Elementary School. He said his mission aligns with Toys for Tots, serving kids in need.

"We have a lot of space here, and we're willing to share it as best we can," Troutman said. "So, hopefully we can make an arrangement so they can utilize the building."

Heise said he's expecting even more toys and more presents to give out this Christmas. Which is a good problem to have.
