Family raising $15,000 to cover expenses for infant daughter's surgery

Bella Lewis’s first few moments were captured in a photo.

She is her mom’s, Vanessa Elizalde, newest pride and joy.

"I counted toes, I counted fingers, and it seemed like everything was ok," Elizalde said.

Bella is now 4-months old, and like many her age, loves her pacifier.

The Carrollton infant appears to be a healthy baby girl.

But her father, Horace Lewis said the reality is, she's not.

"Life or death thing, definitely, in another two months, with her condition, she would be dead," Lewis said.

She was born with a heart defect and surgery is the only option.

"I can't even put into words the pain you have when you hear that your daughter has to go through open heart surgery or she's going to be dead," Elizalde said.

Elizalde and Lewis have both given up their jobs to care for Bella and run her several times a week to appointments at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.

In mid-October, that's where doctors will perform the procedure.

It’s no small expense, $150,000. And they said their insurance will cover 85 percent.

But that still leaves thousands of dollars for them to cover.

"We're falling behind on everything, I mean, we had to reach out to you guys because this is our last straw this is our last hope," Elizalde said.

They've started a GoFundMe page for Bella.

"I'll go to the end of the Earth for my baby, it don't matter, I'll lose everything to make sure she has what she needs to survive this," Lewis said.

They are hoping to raise $15,000 to help with the costs and bring a sense of normalcy to Bella's young life.

"It's really hard, because we worked really hard and to see her have to go through all of that is very difficult," Elizalde said.
